Geomagnetic Latitude |

The all sky camera located in Saskatoon should give also give an indication of the Auroral Activity taking place in the Edmonton area as well, as both cities are located at a very similar geomagnetic latitude. Edmonton is located at approximately 60 degrees magnetic latitude (in CGM coordinates) as is Saskatoon, hence if aurora are visible in one place then they are likely to be visible in the other (weather permitting of course). Geographic latitude represents the angular measurement from the equator (0 deg) to the geographic north pole (the rotation axis of the Earth at 90 deg). Geomagnetic latitude refers to the same angular measurement, but is relative to the geomagnetic north pole, which is offset from the rotational north pole by ~11 degrees. Aurora occur in an oval region surrounding this pole. For more information, see the Auroral Oval page of the CSSDP. |
